Fat People have Knees too!

Well, rejoice! My knee is feeling much better after resting it Thursday - Sunday.  I went back to teaching last night and took it easy enough that I wasn't scared I'd reinjure it right off the bat. Also, it was fun to dial back the intensity and dial up and playing with the class.

However, the saga of my annoyed knee goes on.  It's still a little tender and feels tight when I stretch.  I'm being careful about movement and I'm staying the course with my anti-inflammatory meds for the time being.

I also want to procure a knee brace.  Nothing major, just something to help protect my knee while whatever I angered calms down more.

No such luck!

Apparently, if your knee is better than 17 inches around at the thigh above it, you're kinda SOL when it comes to knee braces.  At least locally and at an affordable price.

It's not so much to ask for support for my ailing knee, is it?

Last night I tried 3 different places looking for something I might be able to make work and the best I could do was wrap my knee in self adhesive athletic tape that slid down about 15 minutes in to class.

Come on first aide companies! Fat people have knees too! Give us some support!

The real world ate me.

It seems like this week was just one really, really, really long and terrible day.  Still, I'm actually pretty content all things considered.

Let's rewind to Sunday.

After the high of the Zumbathon I was ready to take on the week.  Marshall was going out to hit the store and BAM his battery was dead. It had to be jumped to go to the Zumbathon on Saturday.  Went to start my car? Also dead.  The issue with mine was the security chip in my engine had died.  Not cool.

Then I went to go teach Zumba at the YMCA and midway through class I moved the wrong way and heard/felt something go POP in my back just below my shoulder blade.  YEOWCH!~ I could barely make it through the rest of class and was ungodly thankful for my front row divas for holding it down for me.

Monday the main was not any better. Marsh drove me to work and I brought a pillow and my ice pack to the office, medicated with a rotation of ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin to keep the swelling at bay.  It only moderately worked.  On top of being in pain I had a big meeting at work this week so I had a TON of actual work to do.  So I couldn't take it easy and relax.  I had to be productive.

After work I still had a class to teach and I got there and I made it through... it wasn't all that fun though.  On top of everything else I slapped the floor doing Shawty got Moves and hurt my thumb.  OW! I made it worse today.  See?

Bad picture, but the bruise isn't pretty to begin with.
I finally got in to see the doctor on Wednesday.  Tuesday was painful but no worse than Monday but I knew I needed to have it checked.

(Digression.  I was slightly concerned I had done something to a rib the way it cracked so I did the bad internet user thing and WebMD'd the symptoms.  First suggestion of what was wrong? PULMONARY EMBOLISM.  Second option? Muscle strain. End Digression.)

I went to the doc and he informed me I had, indeed, strained my rhomboid muscle and prescribed vicuprofen (a hybrid of vicodin and ibuprofen), a muscle relaxer, a steroid and gave me a shot of torodol. He told me to keep working out and to push through the pain as much as possible.  He made a good point - I really won't want a muscle that's around my ribs to get too tensed up and it did hurt less if I kept it moving.  So I kept up with my normal workout schedule.

Thursday was the day of the big meeting.  I barely slept Wednesday night because, apparently, this specific muscle relaxer acts like ritalin for me and I was super focused and mentally aware all night but I got up and headed to work and then Raleigh for the meeting and presentation.  It went really well.  I was exhausted.

I got to teach my first class at a new location after work on Thursday and it was unbelievable! I love the energy of the folks there and can't wait to see them again next week.  On a sad note I did have cancel Hip Hop Hustle Thursday night because I tried several of the moves and it caused pain beyond what I could push through and not cry.  Back to it next week though!

Yesterday was a super sad day for me too because it was a coworkers last day and I was so sad to see her go.  She is an amazing woman and I'm glad I had the honor of working with her.  I cried saying goodbye.  I try so hard not to cry at work.  For her, it was worth it.

I also got to have a girly night out yesterday - went to a ThirtyOne part with my friend Jennifer.  Was out in Tarboro but worth the drive.  It was great to spend time with her.

Today I had to skip my morning Zumba class due to what I can only describe as a hangover from the muscle relaxer pain killer combination.  It was hard to fall asleep but when I did I slept well... but I woke up feeling like someone drilled in to my temples.  I did, however, get to go to a Zumbathon in Goldsboro to support the instructors out that way.  It was a blast and I loved getting to teach for the crew out there.  It was a rush!

Now I'm spending the evening reading and relaxing with the boys.  Tomorrow I go for a run/jog/walk and teach at the Y.  ALSO it's weigh in and measurement day.  Because I forgot about quarterly measurements 2 weeks ago.  Whoops! Tomorrow! Yayayay!

My Achilles Tendon is my Achilles Heel.

My Achilles tendon really is an Achilles tendon. It's going to be the death of me.

On November 12, 2005 I fell in my drive way while getting in to my car.  I broke my ankle.  Specifically I snapped off my Lateral malleolus.  I broke it off. SNAP.  (Yes, it made that noise.)

Something like this happened. It hurt.
In the process I did some ugly things to my Achilles tendon and the other tendons and ligaments in my ankle and foot.  It was not a pleasant injury and the recovery was fabulously awful.

Since then I have periods of time where my ankle decides it just wants to be a pain... literally and figuratively. About this time last year I came down on my ankle roughly and got my tendon all inflamed.  It took probably 3 months to get back to working out without pain.  This time?  I tweaked it stretching! STRETCHING! Last week when I said it hurt to teach HHH it was because of this silly tendon and it's currently inflamed status.

Here's the thing - I am doing everything I know to do to in order to get this silly tendon to heal up.  I rest it (outside of teaching, obviously), ice, compression, elevation, anti-inflammatory meds and massaging the tendon before bed time.  It's not getting worse but it's not really getting better either.

It feels better for a day or two and then I'm walking down the hallway at work and it goes "OW! NO WALKING LADY!" or it feels fine all day and then I get up to pee at 3a.m. and it says "Saaaam! Get back in to bed!!!!" Ungh! I just want this to stop being so schizophrenic.

Aside from dealing with the bum ankle I've been enjoying getting my hands in to the Team Beach Body coaching arena.  I'm really excited about the release of Tropical Shakeology next week.  I need to call tomorrow and get my autoship changed to Strawberry. MmMm.

I'm really falling in love with GreenBerry too! The sample I got has wound up being addictive.  It's all about getting the right fruit juice behind it and the right fresh or frozen fruit to get the right consistency.  Favorite GreenBerry recipe so far?

  • 1 scoop GreenBerry Shakeology
  • 1 cup V8 Splash - Mango Peach
  • 1 cup frozen Mango chunks.
OMG! It's green and awful looking but it tastes so awesome. I've made this three times so far.  The third time I also added some fresh raspberries I needed to use up and it was too good for words.

Tomorrow is my 30 day weigh in and measurement meeting for my BB challenge and I am excited to see what the scales and tape have to say.

I feel like I'm on a real roll. Nutritionally I'm making good decisions, my exercise schedule is solid and I'm starting to work on some LifeKraze challenges to do 2012 crunches and 2012 push-ups in 2012.  I'm behind but I'm working on them day by day!  I can do this! I can do it all!

Worst. Week. Ever. and 30 before 30.

Let's recap...

Sunday night I sliced my thumb so deeply that it bled for over three hours.  I was opening a can of water chestnuts to make a veggie stir fry.  Apparently eating healthy is going to be the death of me! I knew I probably needed stitches but I was NOT going to the ER unless it kept bleeding or got worse to a point where I couldn't control the bleeding.

I went in to work Monday morning and it was still oozing on and off.  I tried to call my doctor but kept getting put on hold.  I wound up going to see another doctor to get a tetanus shot.  He said my finger needed stitches but because it happened more than 6 hours before he couldn't stitch it.  Got my shot, directions to keep it clean and dry and sent on my way home. I taught a kick butt class that night and hoped that keeping my arm moving would make it not hurt the way tetanus shots normally do.

Tuesday my arm was a bit sore but it didn't hurt.  I was so pleased! Things started to go south about 10am though.  I wound up with hives down my neck and over to my shoulder.  I thought it was stress but then it dinged - it was a minor allergic reaction to the tetanus.  I know this because it's on my shoulder and neck next to my injection site.  Brilliant.  At least it was minor and was easily controlled by benadryl. Sarah and I had two amazing hours of Zumba Tuesday night.  That helped to make me feel better more than anything.  Woo endorphin rush! I did end the night by bashing my head against my bedside table giving me a knot on the head and a bad headache.

Wednesday is when the bottom dropped out.  At about 2 p.m. the knot in my arm from the tetanus got huge, red, swollen and was hot to the touch,.  I was not pleased. It started to hurt to move my arm to answer my phone.  I had a class to teach and a TurboKick class to take and I wasn't giving in to the stupid injection so I went! And I regretted it - instantly!  I probably would have been okay with just the Zumba but that hour of TK is my hour! I love that class, I love the instructor, and I love just being a student.  (Oddly enough, though, I want to get certified for TK now. LOL)  During Zumba one of my students started calling me "Nemo" because I had one good arm and one that wouldn't go above shoulder height.  It was still a great class, though.  I love the crew at the studio! Ended the night with a big dose of motrin and a hot compress on my arm.

Thursday morning my arm was still killing me and it showed very few signs of getting better.  I medicated and did another warm compress and tried to force my arm to move as much as possible.  I knew holding it still was a bad idea.  I taught Zumba at the Y and then headed to the studio where I goofed off for the last half of Sarah's class before teaching Hip Hop Hustle.  I was in agony because moving my arm was difficult but I was so high on life it didn't really matter.  My arm was throbbing but it was moving easier than it was the night before and I pushed through to teach the entire HHH class.

Then on Friday I hated myself for doing so.  My arm was killing me and then I had to go and add insult to injury - it was time for my depo shot.  So now I have a bum right arm, a sore spot on my left hip and I'm feeling gross all over.  I decided I wanted to go out to dinner and splurge! Nachos! Buffalo chicken sandwich! A light beer! A tasty molten chocolate cake! When I got home I was sitting on the couch and something in my lower back popped and I nearly puked it all up.  I was scared I popped a disc out of place or broke something. I took meds and went to bed before hurting myself further.

This morning  was feeling better but I was still in pain in my hip and my shoulder but at least my back wasn't hurting! Zumba this morning was fabulous and I've spent the day grocery shopping and then taking a much needed almost 3 hour nap.  Now, of course, this has me worried.  It could be more post injection grossness or it could be the tip of me getting the flu.  Normally I get hit with the exhaustion first and then the other symptoms.  Going to take it easy tonight and pray I feel better in the morning.

About a week ago someone on the Powder Blue instructor Facebook page mentioned she was doing a 30 before 30 list - 30 things to do before her 30th birthday which is next January.  I thought this was a great idea! Since I've only got till October I'm going to push to do all 30 before then but I'll be happy if I finish the list before 2013 starts.  One of things I added to the list - get TurboKick certified.  Other things on the list include: conquering my fear of sand and walking barefoot on the beach, baking a cake completely from scratch, reading some books, watching some movies I never got around to, various other fitness related things.  I'll be updating as time goes on when I cross things off.

Has anyone out there done anything similar?
